Strawberry’s Monday Meme, Thursday Edition!

I’ve been pondering this whole concept of an SL Bucket List all week. To be honest, its been driving me a little batty; wiggling away in the back of my brain like a worm in an apple. Second Life is such a huge place with so many things to do, see and experience. So many different ways to express yourself, to explore hidden talents, and discover new traits you didn’t know about yourself or your friends. And yet after seven years in and out of SL, there’s not a whole lot undiscovered for me…. for which I have the time.  So once I took the, “Ok, if I didn’t have an RL that kept me plenty busy…” and “You’ve already done that.. but doesn’t mean it can’t be on a bucket list if you’d like to again…” I was able to actually come up with a few things I really would like to do yet in SL.
Meme Instructions: Share at least 5 items on your Second Life Bucket List and try and complete one of the items on the list this week. Don’t forget to leave a link to your list in the comments on her post  so we all can come by and check it out!

1. Host a monthly SL Version of Stitch n’ Bitch
While the traditional Stitch n’ Bitch finds its roots in WWII knitting circles, its a concept which I think would translate wonderfully into SL. I’ve done something similar with others many times: get together a small group of people, preferably in Skype/Voice, to chat, laugh, drink (lots of drink…) and help each other with whatever project each person is working on at the time. Its a way to be working on something but social at the same time, get help or feedback from friends, and have a laugh doing it. Though it would need a unique name.

2. Host a regular Event.
There are soooooo many weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual events on SL there really doesn’t need to be another one and yet I find myself wanting to do so. I have a full sim that I play on but really don’t DO anything with. I also struggle with the “Does SL really need Yet Another Event?” Maybe its just offering up the space and prims for someone to come in and host an already existing event on my sim. It would be nice to meet new folks regularly again.

3. Roleplay!
I’m a writer at heart. I started online adventures maaaaaany years ago on text based RPGs (MUSH/MUD/MUX, ahh, TinyFugue, how I miss thee) and I miss it. I’d love to be in a good, para-roleplay environment again where I can spend hooooours roleplaying. I just don’t have the time. I’ve dipped my toes into lots of RP on SL over the years and the choices available are either a) metered combat, b) rapidfire, one-line, no-sense-of-time-nor-space “rp”, and c) para RP that takes hooooours to do.  My preference is for the paragraph, beautiful writing RP… but when my SL time is limited, its hard to be able to devote the time necessary. Someday.

4. Learn Mesh
This… is more a pipe dream, really. I’ve tried Blender. I’ve tried ZBrush. I don’t have the patience, which is unsurprising to those that really know me, to make heads nor tails of them.  I don’t have the resources to purchase 3D Studio Max or any of the real high end programs just for a hobby. I make do with sculpts and regular prims and photoshop. I really enjoy making textures. One day maybe.

5. Be Social!
Here’s a hard one for me, too. Not that being social is difficult, that’s easy- its the time aspect again. Lots of people think, “Well, I haven’t heard from you in X amount of time, you must not be interested.” and with me, that just isn’t the case. When I’m around, There’s so many things I want to do that I get SQUIRREL distracted easily and off on tangents and my list of what I wanted to do goes out the window in favor of clog dancing in bear suits or something equally silly. There are people on my friends list that I would love to do nothing more than spend hours talking with, hanging out, and ensuring that they are more than adequately aware that I value their time and friendship- and I honestly really do a pisspoor job of it half- ok most of- the time.

And now that I’ve typed this up, I see the general theme of “Be More Social!”

Funny, that.

Toodles,

-N

  2. Petra Carpenter says:

I agree very much with 2, 3 and 5. I could give a long list of why but given how long you have known me there should be no need. However I will share with why I would pass on 1….I don’t do projects but then again…you should know that also!

Your blog entries often make me smile-least I know then your still alive and kicking.

  3. This is the first time I am hearing the term Stitch n’ Bitch and now I want to use it all the time, LOL! You should totally do this!

    1. We used to have them RL all the time. People would bring over projects of all sorts- artwork, crochet and knit, computer projects, creative writing.. and we’d all help each other with ideas but mostly just talk and drink heavily. 🙂 They’re a lot of fun.

  4. ok this made me giggle.. and yep i saw the same theme nigel stop hibernating and be more social!! Oh my god strawberry you have never heard the term stitch n bitch? I guess that is the scadian in me but we do this at medieval events.

  5. Since so much of building something in SL involves resizing a prim through the second option on the edit menu, perhaps ‘Prim Stretch & Grim Kvetch’?

  6. elizawierwight says:

You left shag Eliza off dat list Sir Hotshot.

    1. Oh, but a dream such as that, dear Lizzy, is so far out of reach, it would just make my bucket list unrealistic.

  7. Oh yes, on Stitch and Bitch for SL. I have found some cool knitting related items in SL, too. What Next and Awesome Blossom, and I think Lisp, had some, at least. I just started a facebook group for tinies and friends who like crafting, it is open for biggies, too, of course. Tiny crafters.
